ART IN REVIEW - April 2015

Natalie shared her passion for oil painting as she talked us through the foundational stages of still life painting. 

The simple objects were carefully arranged  with strategic lighting. She emphasized that the beginning stage is the longest and most important. 

Her aim is to find ways to manipulate light and to draw the viewer’s eye into the canvas.

Natalie began with a synthetic brush, broadly putting in tones in monotone. She worked freely with strong, loose abstract forms. As the painting progressed, some areas would be worked more realistically.

Colour was applied wet-in-wet with mongoose, badger or hogshair brushes. 

She loves to work from a large pool of paint and uses no recipe for colour mixing.” It’s like playing jazz; improvising.”

Natalie doesn’t dilute paint much but keeps it thick enough to modulate on the canvas. 

She often leaves shadows fairly translucent and keeps edges broken; not fluffy but strong. 

The focal points have the most colour and the strongest accent. She also uses a palette knife.

Natalie advised us to keep moving on through a painting ; to get ourselves out of our comfort zones and to let go of outcomes.
